Jesus, The “I AM”

“Jesus said unto them, verily, verily, I say unto you, before Abraham was, I AM.”  John 8:58

The Lord Jesus Christ’s employment of the title, “I AM”, identifies Him with the Jehovah of the Old Testament and demonstrates His absolute deity. Jesus Christ is the Great “I AM.”

The words “I AM” stand for Jehovah. The Jews of Jesus days understood who I AM was. This is why in John 5:59 they sought to kill Him. Jesus was publicly declaring that he existed before Abraham was born. Jesus is saying that He is the eternal God, the God of Abraham.

The “I AM” carries us back to the occasion of the Old Testament where God appeared to Moses at the burning bush. The Lord God bade him to go and lead Israel out of Egypt. The Lord told Moses to say that “I AM” sent him when he was asked by the Jews in Egypt who had sent him.

Please notice a seven fold filling of the “I AM” in the book of John which demonstrates the absolute deity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

1. I AM the Bread of Life: John 6:35

In the context of John 6, especially verses 22-63, the contrast is drawn between those who received the manna in the Old Testament and died and those who receive the living bread in the New Testament and have eternal life. The manna simply ministered to a temporal need, and Christ Jesus ministers to an eternal need.

Jesus Christ is that which satisfies the soul. Jesus is the living bread according to vs. 51. Just as eating is a necessary act to live physically, receiving Jesus as Lord and Savior is necessary to live eternally, (vs. 58).

Also, as eating food is a personal act, that is, no one can eat for someone else, also, each individual is responsible for receiving eternal life themselves.

2. I AM the Light of the World: John 8:12

Jesus has just exposed the sin of the scribes and Pharisees in our context when they had brought the woman taken in adultery. He also gave light to the woman according to verse 11 in that Jesus said, “neither do I condemn thee, go and sin no more.” Not only does light expose sin, but it gives life unto men.

According to John 1:4-9, Jesus was a light that shineth in darkness. That is why the gospel is referred to as the light of the glorious gospel of Christ in II Corinthians 4:4. According to vs. 6, that light shines in the heart of the believer and reveals the truth about Jesus Christ and salvation.

3. I AM the Door: John 10:9

A door speaks of entrance into the presence of God. It speaks of access in contrast to a wall. By nature we are separated from God, but according to Ephesians 2:13, we are made nigh by the blood of Christ. Just as the tabernacle in the Old Testament only had one door and the ark in Noah’s day only had one door, Jesus Christ is the only access we have to God. Judas Iscariot kissed the Door of Heaven (the Lord Jesus Christ) and went to hell. Remember, doors are to be used, not admired.

4. I AM the Good Shepherd: John 10:11-18

As the Good Shepherd we see the suffering of our Lord for the sheep (Psalm 22). We are considered as sheep. Sheep are helpless, dumb and weak animals. They cannot defend themselves, for they have no claws or fangs. Jesus not only gave His life for our sins at Calvary, but he is also considered as the Great Shepherd seated at the right hand of God the Father (Hebrews 13:20), making intercession for us (Psalm 23). In I Peter 5:4, He is called the chief shepherd which shows His return to this earth to redeem the saints (Psalm 24).

5. I AM the Resurrection and Life: John 11:25

Jesus is the giver of life. Those who trust Him as Savior shall never die, vs. 26. All the saints of God shall rise again, vs. 23. The believer has everlasting life and shall not come into condemnation but is passed from death unto life according to John 5:24. Those outside of Christ will receive the resurrection of damnation, John 5:29. But there is a glorious resurrection awaiting the saint of God. I Corinthians 15:50-58, I Thessalonians 4:13-18.

6. I AM the Way, the Truth, the Life: John 14:6

Before sin entered into the world, Adam and Eve enjoyed communion with God and possessed spiritual life. But because of sin, they forfeited the relationship they had with God in the beginning. Mankind has not only lost the way to God, but he has lost the address. No man can come to the Father but by the Son.

Mankind has lost the way, rejected the truth and forfeited life. The only hope for humanity is to turn to the Lord Jesus Christ for Salvation.

Acts 4:12 “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

I Timothy 2:5 “For there is one God, and one mediator    between God and men. The man Christ Jesus.”

I Corinthians 3:11 “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

Hebrews 10:19-20 “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and  living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; …”

7. I AM of the True Vine: John 15:1

The vine is an earthly type of a spiritual truth. Jesus used this to show His disciples that true believers are closely united to the Savior. Please understand that spiritual life as well as fruit bearing depends upon union, (new birth). As the vine is the true source of its branches, Christ is the true source of spiritual life. In the Old Testament, Israel is pictured as a vine, but failed to bring forth good fruit. Psalm 80:8-9, Isaiah 5:1, Jeremiah 2:21. But Jesus is the true vine and He shall never fail. Without Him we have no Life Eternal, nor will we bear fruit.

Conclusion:

“What Think ye of Christ” was the question asked in Matthew 22:42 by the Lord to the Pharisees. If Jesus is the Great “I AM”, then a person must accept Him as Lord and Savior in order to go to Heaven. Have you accepted Him? He is the Savior of the world. Today is the time, the decision is yours. “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13).
