Cross-Dressing

 

“The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.”

Deuteronomy 22:5

     God established from the beginning a distinction between the sexes. He created the male and female with distinctive natures and functions, which are to be maintained and preserved. Cross-dressing is a violation of Scripture. It is inappropriate for men and women to wear each other’s garments. God detests that which makes a woman masculine or a man effeminate. Satan has made every attempt to remove the distinction that God has established. The unisex movement of our day has brought much confusion and corruption in our society. Cross-dressing did not begin in the church of Jesus Christ. Cross-dressing has its origin among the heathen in their worship of their gods. It is also practiced and promoted in the sodomite community.

     God’s Word must be our instruction manual on the subject of cross-dressing, and not Hollywood or fashion magazines. Years ago, the church would not have tolerated cross-dressing, but today it not only condones it, but promotes its practice.

 

The Context of Deuteronomy Twenty-two

 

     Before we actually take a look at verse five, let’s consider the context. Many would object to our use of an Old Testament passage on the subject of clothing, but of thirty verses in this chapter, only three could possibly be questionable as to whether they would apply to the church. The majority of the chapter is showing how our relationship should be to our neighbor, marriage, adultery and rape. The three verses that are debated today are verses 9-10. But we don't throw out the entire chapter because of these three verses. Even they are worthy of our consideration. Now, back to verse five. Nowhere in the New Testament did God change this truth.

 

The Word “Abomination”

 

     The word “abomination” is found several times in the Old and New Testaments. It means that which is disgusting, detestable, hateful or vile. In other words, it is that which makes God sick. God has not changed, that which was an abomination three thousand years ago is still an abomination today. In the Bible, once something is an abomination, it is always an abomination. In Leviticus 18:22, sodomy is considered an abomination; idolatry is an abomination, (Deuteronomy 7:25), witchcraft is an abomination (Deuteronomy 18:9-14), and according to Revelation 17:5, mystery Babylon, the great whore is an abomination. According to our text, Deuteronomy 22:5, anyone who wears clothes that pertaineth (resembleth) to the opposite sex is an abomination. The subject is serious business with God and should command our attention.

 

The Distinction Between the Sexes

 

     Our text, Deuteronomy 22:5 reveals the fact that men and women's outer garments in Bible times were not identical. Breeches were men's apparel that cover the legs, at least below the knees. Every time breeches are mentioned in the Bible they refer to men's garments. The phrase “gird up thy loins” is never mentioned concerning a woman (Job 38:3, 40:7, I Kings 18:46, John 13:4). The man’s garment could be gathered up and girded about the waist to allow more freedom for walking, running or battle. A woman’s garment resembled floor length dresses which did not accent the figure. These garments were very modest when bending over or working. The woman’s garment would resemble a robe. In I Timothy 2:9, the word “apparel” is used in reference to a woman’s garment, “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array.” The Greek word for apparel here is “katastole”, which means as we have already stated, “a long floor length garment.” Not only is there a clear distinction between the sexes in their dress, but a difference in many other areas also. For example, in I Corinthians 11:14-15, there is to be a difference in the length of hair. The text says that even nature teaches us that there is a difference between a man and a woman. She is called the weaker vessel in I Peter 3:7. There is a clear distinction in size, strength, looks, voice and many other areas. The facial hair (beard) on a man is clearly another difference between the sexes.

     The unisex movement of our day is breaking down the distinction between the sexes. Cross-dressing is promoting the sodomite agenda and the unisex society that will line up with the Antichrist’s kingdom. Many queers (transvestites) parade around in public dressed as a woman. You might be shocked at how many Sodomite fashion designers are in the clothing business today. Again, sodomy and idolatry have always gone hand in hand with cross-dressing.

     One example of the close association between sodomy and cross-dressing is seen in the following information:

     Virginia Mollenknott, a lesbian, was a consultant for the New International Version of the Bible in the 1970’s. The word sodomite does not appear in the translation at all. She has often bragged about her lesbianism. In 2001, she published Omnigender. In this book she describes her aversion to wearing dresses. She said, “I feel myself to be female all right, but masculine at the same time, so that dresses and skirts feel rather ridiculous. . . and this despite the fact that as a child I was not allowed to wear overalls, shorts, or pants. . . One of the greatest benefits of coming out publicly as a lesbian was that I could go through my closet and give away all my dresses and skirts except for a few Gertrude Sten-ish floor-length skirts that somehow seemed less of an affront to my nature.” You will notice that she admits that dresses are feminine and that pants are masculine.

     Pants on women have not become outdated like most fashions, proving it to be Satan’s favorite sin. Pants have always symbolized man’s authority. Even the world knows this truth. Just look on a bathroom door in our public bathrooms. One side will have a figure with a dress and the other pants. The church years ago would not have tolerated cross-dressing. Even Ethel Traphagen, a fashion designer who promoted the wearing of slacks among women around 1915, in later years, said she was sorry she ever suggested such a fashion. In one hundred years (1900’s) our entire nation was revolutionized in the area of dress.

     In conclusion, we could give many more Scriptures and examples but space does not permit. The very fact that the world loves and promotes cross-dressing between the sexes should bring caution to the Christian. If our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, then we should not defile it with wearing that which is called an abomination. Any preacher or church that condones or promotes cross-dressing is condoning or promoting an abomination. May the Good Lord help us to see this truth.

 

A woman is just as much out of character in a pair of pants as a man is in a dress.
